Church News: 2009

This week at the office December 31, 2009

This week has been pleasantly “low key” as we wind up another calendar year and get ready for another semester of Living University classes. Last weekend, more than 220 brethren converged on Charlotte for a special Sabbath service and dinner/dance on Saturday and family activities on Sunday. In his sermon, Mr. Meredith reviewed the recent history of God’s Church and outlined the challenges ahead as we approach the end of this age. This week he recorded a new Tomorrow’s World television program titled, “Benchmarks of Prophecy,” which offers the booklet Fourteen Signs Announcing Christ’s Return.

Internet Update: Continued Growth December 17, 2009

The number of people visiting our websites around the world continues to grow. Last month we were blessed with a 30% increase in the number of visits to the Tomorrow’s World website compared with the previous November. This comes at a time when due to cost-saving measures, our Internet ad spending was 30% less than a year ago! Among our international websites, the French website, www.mondedemain.org, experienced the greatest increase in visits during the same time frame. The French website is updated by M. VG Lardé. Surely the increase comes from God (1 Corinthians 3:6).

Here in Charlotte, Mr. Meredith has been writing and conducting meetings. He also taped a new Tomorrow’s World program titled, “Blessings of Righteous Government,” offering the booklet The World Ahead: What Will It Be Like? Mr. Crockett reports that Festival plans are proceeding well for next year. We are also planning the budget for 2010, and we would appreciate your prayers as we go through this process. I had a very profitable trip to the West Coast last weekend, where I visited congregations in La Crescenta and Garden Grove, California, in addition to several other visits. Mr. Martin Fannin reports that, in spite of very inclement weather, seven new people managed to show up for his Bible lecture in the Blairsville, Georgia area last Sabbath. We are coming to the end of another semester of Living University classes, with more than 100 students enrolled. Registration for the Spring Semester is also underway for anyone desiring to increase their knowledge of the Scriptures.

We have had a very busy and stimulating week with all four of the television presenters at the office. Mr. Rod King, Mr. Wallace Smith and Mr. Mario Hernandez all taped new Tomorrow’s World television programs this week. Mr. King recorded a program titled, “Jerusalem: City of Peace?” which offers the booklet The Middle East in Prophecy. Mr. Wallace Smith taped two programs, “Seven Signs of the Antichrist” (offering the booklet on the Antichrist) and “Diagnosis: Christianity,” offering The Big Picture DVD. Mr. Smith also taped two promotional videos for our Internet effort. We also had a brief visit by Mr. Rees Ellis, the Area Pastor for Belgium, to work out with Mr. Apartian more details of the return of the Belgian congregation to the Living Church of God. At our weekly executive luncheon, Mr. Meredith led a discussion about more effective ways for reaching the world with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Last Sabbath, I had a very encouraging visit at a combined service with the West Virginia congregations. On Sunday at their home, Mr. and Mrs. Shumway hosted a mini-conference that Mr. Shumway and I conducted for leaders in that area. A number of new people attended the Tomorrow’s World Bible lecture that Mr. Martin Fannin conducted last Sabbath in Asheville, North Carolina. Mr. Fannin will conduct another lecture on December 5 the in Blairsville, Georgia area. Your prayers for these lectures are much appreciated.

Council of Elders meets, November 16–18 November 20, 2009

Dr. Roderick C. Meredith chaired three days of meetings of the Living Church of God Council of Elders, November 16–18. Council members discussed news of the Work and future plans, and considered a number of doctrinal and administrative matters. For three members -- Messrs. Rodger Bardo, Martin Fannin and Sheldon Monson -- this was the first Council of Elders meeting they have attended in Charlotte. Former COE member Mr. Jonathan McNair, who currently oversees LCG youth programs, also sat in on some sessions.

Mr. Meredith has been writing items for the Living Church News, and he completed another co-worker letter that was mailed last Friday. Last week, on the new ION network we had a record response (more than 1,000) to Mr. Meredith’s program, “Seven Steps to Destruction”—the total response from all USA TV stations should be well over 5,000.

Encouraging reports are coming in from around the world, in spite of some of the trials that a number of brethren encountered during the Feast—especially in the Philippines. Festival attendance this year was greater than last year. Here in Charlotte, we are getting back into the groove of daily tasks—and that includes preparing for the Feast in 2010! Living University classes resumed this week, and we have several Tomorrow’s World Bible Lectures scheduled over the next several weeks.

Mr. Wallace Smith is also in Charlotte this week to tape a special Tomorrow’s World DVD titled 2012: Mystery and Truth. I had a very pleasant and profitable visit in Cincinnati, Ohio, last weekend for a Sabbath service and a mini-conference with leaders from that area. Mr. Ames will be presenting a Tomorrow’s World Bible Lecture in Toronto this Sunday after Trumpets. About 6,300 subscribers have been invited to attend. Please keep that event in your prayers. Please pray also that God will protect everyone travelling during the Holy Days and that He will bless and inspire the Feast of Tabernacles that will be held in more than 40 sites around the world.

Visitors heard a message titled, “Where Is God’s Church Today?” Many visitors stayed long after the presentation for further discussion of the message and to ask additional Bible questions.

Mr. Charles Ogwyn reported some very positive gains in the USA for the first six months of 2009. Online literature requests are averaging more than 8,500 per month (compared to 7,100 per month last year at this time). Television responses are running 13% higher than last year, and visit requests are about 7% ahead of last year. On Thursday, February 26, Dr. Meredith and Mr. Ames each taped a new Tomorrow's World telecast on the new set, in our new studio building two doors down from the main Headquarters facility. Our thanks go out to all the brethren who prayed for God's blessing on the acquisition and renovation of the new building, and the design and implementation of the new set.

This week we held the first Internet-based conference for the Spanish Work with more than 30 individuals from eleven countries participating on Sunday, 22 February, 2009. It was conducted by Dr. Douglas Winnail, Mr. Dibar Apartian, and Mr. Rod McNair from the headquarters building in Charlotte, North Carolina. Mr. Mario Hernandez and Mr. Tony Mora in California provided translation. Other participants were in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico, and Spain. Computer webcams allowed those involved to see as well as hear the sessions as they were delivered.

After greetings were exchanged online, the conference kicked off with a pre-recorded presentation by Dr. Meredith in which he reminded everyone of our mission and purpose. Additional conference topics included Church government, baptismal counseling, divine healing, holding public Bible lectures, Living University and other resources to build the Church of God. The conference was designed to provide those who are already guiding and shepherding the flock of God in these areas with the tools to do so more effectively.

The atmosphere was one of joy, enthusiasm for the Work of God and brotherly love. It was exciting for all involved to see how technology can assist the Church as it seeks to do the great Work set before God’s people in preparing the way for the return of Jesus Christ.

Work is proceeding on schedule in the new building housing the TV studio and offices for media personnel. This week, Dr. Meredith held meetings and made personal phone contact with individuals across the country. Mr. Charles Ogwyn reports that the online Bible Study Course is now being taken by individuals in 111 countries around the world. Mr. and Mrs. Crockett are in Michigan. He is attending a Religious Conference Management Association meeting. These meetings provide useful contacts for planning future Festival sites. Last weekend, I gave a Public Bible Lecture in Atlanta on the theme “What’s Ahead for America?” In the PowerPoint lecture I explained how to identify America in prophecy and what Bible prophecy reveals about America’s future. We had 69 visitors attend the lecture. Some of the attendees were brand-new, some had previous contact with the Church and some were from other COG groups. Your prayers will be appreciated for a follow-up lecture that will be conducted this weekend.
