Large Predator Deaths and Ecosystem Destruction.

“Three quarters of the world’s big carnivores—including lions, wolves and bears—are in decline, says a new study. A majority now occupy less than half their former ranges according to data published in the journal, Science… The researchers say the loss of these species could be extremely damaging for ecosystems the world over” (BBC, January 9, 2014). The Radicalization of Europe.

“The European Commission has said preventive action is needed to stop what it sees as spreading radicalism across the EU. ‘We see that extremism, xenophobia and nationalism keeps growing in Europe [and] we see worrying signals that these groups act as breeding grounds of ideology motivated by violence and extremist views,’ EU commissioner for home affairs Cecilia Malmstrom told reporters” (EU Observer, January 15, 2014). “To counter what she views as an internal security threat, Malmstrom announced a series of recommendations which she wants member states to immediately implement.” The recommendations “will add to the EU’s arsenal of some 240 existing counter-terrorism measures” (ibid.). More War on the Way.

Since January 2013, “201 terrorist attacks have been staged worldwide. In the Middle East, there are now eight countries officially at war, involving 163 different militias, separatist and anarchic groups. In the Congo, Mali, Nigeria, Somalia, and the Sudan—there are now 24 countries and 141 different groups involved in wars. In Europe, there are now eight countries involved in official wars involving 65 different groups of militias, guerrillas and separatists… All told, there are now a near record high of 60 countries involved in war, involving 512 militias and separatist groups” (Money and Markets, January 20, 2014). Based on a detailed analysis of wars and rebellions and the cycle they follow, financial analyst Larry Edelson predicts an increase in these activities through the year 2020 (ibid.). And based on his analysis he also predicts “And, yes, war-like conditions, rebellions and revolts are coming to America” (ibid.). Read More »

Contaminated Seafood.

A large portion (86 percent) of America’s seafood is imported, and about half comes from fish farms that raise shrimp, tilapia, Atlantic salmon, and shellfish (YahooNews.com, October 24, 2012).  “In China, many fish farms reportedly use pig manure as feed, which contains salmonella and makes tilapia more susceptible to disease.  In addition, ‘shrimp farms in South and Southeast Asia are essentially factory farms, with all that implies—including antibiotic overuse’” (ibid.).  Often shrimp are “farmed in ponds treated with a long list of chemicals:  urea, superphosphate, diesel, pesticides, antibiotics (including ones that are banned in the U.S.), sodium tripolyphosphate (a suspected neurotoxin), borax, and occasionally caustic soda... Due to the chemicals used to treat the ponds, the area nearby quickly turns into a dead zone for other types of animal life” (Economy in Crisis, December 24, 2013). Read More »

Nigeria’s New Anti-Homosexual Law.

Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan signed a bill on Monday that criminalises same-sex relationships... The bill, which contains penalties of up to 14 years in prison and bans gay marriage, same-sex ‘amorous relationships’ and membership of gay rights groups, was passed by the national assembly last May but Jonathan had delayed signing it into law” (The Guardian, January 13, 2014).  This action drew harsh criticism from the U.S. Secretary of State and other Western nations that have threatened to cut aid to Nigeria (ibid.).  However, Nigeria is an oil-rich nation in need of little international aid (ibid.). May Elections and Europe’s Future.

Voters in the May 2014 Europe-wide elections could set the European Union on a course to reach its prophesied destiny. Currently, “anti-EU parties are leading the polls in France, the Netherlands and Greece” and many now assume that Britain will leave the Union (Telegraph, January 8, 2014). However, “In the run up to the springtime pan-European vote, the EU is gearing up to mount an unprecedented campaign for the hearts and minds of voters,” directing them to vote in a way that will support the construction of a true “United States of Europe” (ibid.). Referring to the significance of the May elections, the European Commission’s vice president observed, “There is a lot at stake. The outcome of these elections will shape Europe for the years to come” (ibid.). Read More »
